At 6am, just before dawn on December 1st, we set off from
Key Largo, through Angel Fish Creek and into the Atlantic headed to Bimini 60
miles away.
We were soon surrounded by water, no land in sight, and the
boat was rockin’ and rollin’ with constant 6’-8’ waves. Both the main and the
jib sails were up, but we also had to use one engine due to a slightly
unfavorable wind direction the entire trip.
Navigation is really not a problem even without landmarks.
You can see our chart below showing the boat with the crosshairs over it, a
green line indicating our course, yellow arrow the wind direction, and the red
line a track we set that shows the course line from Angel Fish Creek to Bimini.
Follow that and you won’t get lost. Also note those numbers in the 2000s which
show the water depth.
After about 8 hours later, I could call “land ho!” By 3pm we
scooted into the entrance to North Bimini and docked at Blue Water Marina. We
were greeted by friendly Bahamian “JR” who helped get us tied up to the dock
and directed Tom to immigration and customs for check in. Exhaustion set in
shortly thereafter.
